Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
review by Voivod, 12 November 2002

Introduction

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin is the sequel to Hitman: Codename 47 by the Danish game developers IO Interactive. While Hitman: Codename 47 did garner quite an interest in the gaming community, it was quite a disappointment due to major flaws in the game; odd game controls and a number of bugs were among them. Fortunately IO Interactive have learned from those mistakes and managed to iron out all the problems, and the result is an amazing gameplay experience that is among the best in recent shooters.

As the title suggests, the game is about being a “Hitman” (duh..). Not “Gunman” or “trigger-happy gunslinger”, so stealth and strategy are the keys here. But what makes this game so unique as well as standing out from the rest is that there are many ways for you to complete a mission. If you hate stealth and want a frag-fest, you can do that too. Stealth is an important part of the game but it is not a must, unlike other titles with similar gameplay such as Thief and the No One Lives Forever series. How well does Hitman 2 stack up against these other popular titles? Let’s take a look.

The Storyline

You are an ex-assassin codenamed '47' who is trying to live a legit life as a gardener in a sanctuary in Italy. The priest, who takes care of you spiritually, was kidnapped. In order for you to get the necessary information from your former employers of his whereabouts, you need to come out of retirement and complete a few assignments for them. One thing leads to another and ultimately you have to complete over 20 missions, which brings you to countries such as Japan, Russia and Malaysia.
