Thermaltake Volcano 6Cu+
review by 8balls, 28 October 2001

Introduction

Thermaltake is no unknown when it comes to CPU cooling solutions, though nowadays they have been suprassed by bigger names such as Alpha, Swiftecha and Thermalright. Made famous by their signature line of orb coolers, Thermaltake also produces a line of non-orb coolers, namely their Volcano line.

The Volcano6Cu+ is on the review block today, where the design is similar to the original Volcano series, but with the inclusion of a copper insert in the base of the cooler, while the main body of the cooler remains aluminium. Having both copper and aluminium ensures a good mix of copper's ability to absorb heat and aluminium's to dissipate heat, where the copper base absorbs the heat from the CPU core, passes it to the aluminium body of the heatsink where it is then dissipated through the fins.

Note that the Volcano6Cu comes in 2 varieties, the regular Volcano6 Cu and the Volcano6 Cu+, where the Cu+ comes with a 7000rpm fan, whereas the vanilla Cu comes with a 4550rpm fan. This cooler supports AMD Athlon CPUs up to 1.5Ghz, as well as Intel PIII 1.13Ghz & Tualatin processors up to 2 Ghz.

A while back, Terence reviewed the Volcano II, which performed quite OK. I would compare the Volcano6 Cu with the Volcano2, but unfortunately our testbeds differ greatly. Anyhow, I would like to extend my gratitude to Thermaltake, as well as their rep, Kenny for bearing with us, and this long overdue review.
